Chapter 10 - THE MONEY FROM HER FATHER

Sarah’s father had died three years earlier.

He left her a modest trust intended for emergencies, Lily’s future education, and Sarah’s long-term security.

Daniel knew about it.

He also knew Sarah almost never touched it.

Elena immediately requested records through lawful channels.

The results came two days later.

Three withdrawals.

Each authorized electronically.

Total: $84,000.

Sarah had approved none of them.

The money had moved first into a joint investment account, then into Northline Strategy Group.

Daniel came to Elena’s office voluntarily.

He looked ten years older.

“I can explain.”

Sarah sat across from him.

“Try.”

He admitted the truth in pieces.

He had been ashamed.

Sarah’s father had helped them with the house down payment. Sarah earned more. Her trust gave her security Daniel did not have.

Ashley noticed his resentment.

She told him he was capable of building something that belonged to him.

She offered a business plan.

Then an opportunity.

Then a way to access capital without waiting for Sarah’s approval.

“I never meant to take your money permanently,” Daniel said. “I was going to put it back.”

Sarah’s voice was quiet.

“You stole it.”

“I borrowed it.”

“You forged my approval.”

Daniel began crying again.

Sarah did not.

Then Ashley walked into Elena’s reception area with her own lawyer.

She had requested a formal meeting.

Her strategy was brilliant in its cruelty.

She claimed Daniel had directed every transaction.

She claimed she believed Sarah consented.

She claimed the occupancy agreement had been presented to her as valid.

She even produced voice messages from Daniel assuring her that “Sarah is on board.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You knew she wasn’t.”

Ashley remained calm.

“Prove it.”

Sarah finally understood why Ashley had encouraged Daniel to make so many decisions himself.

She had built him into a shield.

Daniel turned toward Sarah.

“She set me up.”

Sarah shook her head.

“She tempted you. You set yourself up.”

Ashley’s attorney gathered the documents.

Before leaving, Ashley placed one printed page on the table.

It was a text from Daniel.

Daniel: AFTER THE BABY COMES, I’LL TELL SARAH I WANT A DIFFERENT LIFE.

Sarah looked at him.

Daniel went pale.

“That’s not what it sounds like.”

Ashley smiled faintly.

“No?”

Daniel whispered, “I was talking about leaving my job.”

Ashley reached the door.

May you like

Then she looked back.

“You never told me that.”
