Chapter 9 - THE MESSAGE DANIEL DELETED

Daniel denied it.

Of course he did.

“Ashley is trying to divide us.”

Sarah sat across from him at the kitchen table.

“She doesn’t need to.”

Daniel looked exhausted.

“I made mistakes.”

“You committed them.”

“I was trying to build something.”

“With her.”

“With an investment.”

Sarah slid a printed copy of the Northline agreement toward him.

“You were planning this months before she moved in.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then his phone rang.

Ashley.

He declined the call.

Sarah watched him.

“What did you delete?”

“Nothing.”

“Ashley told me to check your messages.”

“She’s manipulating you.”

“Give me your phone.”

“No.”

That answer ended the conversation.

Later that afternoon, Daniel left to meet an attorney.

He forgot the old family tablet charging in the den.

The tablet was still connected to his cloud account.

Sarah did not search it illegally; Daniel had given her access years earlier and the family account remained shared. Still, she called Elena before touching anything.

“Document only what is already synced,” Elena advised. “Do not impersonate him or open protected accounts.”

Sarah opened the messaging archive.

Most recent conversations had been deleted.

But an older backup remained.

Four months earlier.

Daniel: I’M TIRED OF FEELING LIKE I HAVE TO ASK SARAH FOR PERMISSION TO USE MONEY IN MY OWN MARRIAGE.

Ashley: THEN STOP ASKING.

Daniel: SHE’LL NEVER APPROVE THE CREDIT LINE.

Ashley: YOU DON’T NEED HER TO UNDERSTAND IT UNTIL IT’S WORKING.

Daniel: AND IF IT FAILS?

Ashley: IT WON’T.

Then a message that made Sarah’s hands shake.

Daniel: AFTER SHE DELIVERS, I’LL FIX EVERYTHING.

Ashley: INCLUDING US?

There was a long gap.

Then Daniel replied.

Daniel: ONE THING AT A TIME.

Sarah read it twice.

Megan stood behind her, silent.

The emotional betrayal was unmistakable even if the physical one was not.

But the next message changed the entire timeline.

Ashley: I CAN’T KEEP PRETENDING THE APARTMENT FLOOD STORY.

Daniel: YOU ONLY NEED IT UNTIL YOU’RE IN THE HOUSE.

Sarah stopped breathing.

Ashley had not shown up needing shelter.

Daniel had helped create the excuse.

Then the tablet chimed.

A newly restored cloud message appeared at the bottom.

May you like

It was from Ashley to Daniel, sent that morning.

IF SARAH FINDS OUT WHAT WE DID WITH HER FATHER’S TRUST, WE BOTH GO DOWN.
