Chapter 6 - THE RECORDING

Sarah called an attorney the next morning.

Elena Brooks specialized in family property disputes and financial fraud. She listened without interrupting as Sarah described the home-equity account, the forged-looking occupancy agreement, and the hospital paperwork.

When Sarah finished, Elena said, “Do not threaten anyone. Do not destroy documents. Do not access accounts that aren’t yours. Preserve everything.”

Sarah followed that advice.

Ashley did not make it easy.

She became almost unnaturally helpful.

She cooked.

She folded baby clothes.

She offered to hold Lily so Sarah could sleep.

Every gesture made Sarah more uneasy.

Daniel kept repeating that they could solve everything “as a family.”

Sarah had begun to hate that phrase.

That afternoon, Sarah found Ashley standing outside the nursery.

“Can I help you?”

Ashley smiled.

“You look tired.”

“I am.”

“You should rest.”

“I will when you leave.”

Ashley’s smile disappeared.

“You’re going to regret making this ugly.”

Sarah stepped closer.

“You made it ugly when you used my name.”

Ashley walked away without another word.

That night, Lily cried for nearly an hour.

Sarah was exhausted. Daniel tried to take the baby, but Sarah pulled away.

“You don’t get to act like nothing happened.”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“I’m trying to help.”

“No. You’re trying to make me stop asking questions.”

They argued.

Sarah raised her voice.

She accused him of betraying her.

She said she did not trust him near their finances.

She told him she wanted Ashley out of the house.

Daniel barely responded.

The next morning, Carol arrived again.

This time she carried no gifts.

She carried her phone.

“I heard what happened last night.”

Sarah frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

Carol played an audio recording.

Sarah heard her own voice.

Angry. Tired. Sharp.

Out of context, she sounded unstable.

“You recorded me?”

Daniel appeared in the doorway.

“I was worried.”

“For who?”

“For Lily.”

Sarah stared at him.

“You recorded your postpartum wife during an argument.”

“I needed proof of what’s happening.”

Ashley stepped into view behind him.

Carol looked at Sarah with concern that felt more dangerous than anger.

“If you keep behaving like this, Daniel may need to think about temporary custody.”

Sarah felt ice spread through her chest.

Then Megan called.

Sarah answered.

Her sister’s voice was urgent.

“I checked Ashley’s company.”

Sarah walked toward the window.

“And?”

“It didn’t exist six months ago.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

Megan continued.

“But another company with the same mailing address did.”

“What company?”

“A business owned by Ashley’s former fiancé.”

May you like

“And?”

“He sued her for fraud.”
