Chapter 14 - CAROL’S SECRET
Carol nearly fainted when Sarah showed her the transfer.
“I have never seen that company.”
The company was called CB Heritage Services.
The initials matched Carol Bennett.
Its registered mailing address was a post-office box two towns away.
Daniel stared at his mother.
“Did you sign anything for Ashley?”
Carol shook her head.
Then stopped.
Months earlier, Ashley had helped her “organize retirement documents.”
Insurance forms.
A pension rollover.
An application for what Ashley described as a family estate-planning service.
Carol had signed where Ashley placed tabs.
The pattern was identical.
Sarah felt a bitter echo of her own experience.
Ashley had not only studied Daniel.
She had studied the entire family.
Carol retrieved old emails.
One contained a scanned identification document.
Another contained her signature.
Elena quickly understood.
Ashley had used Carol’s identity to create a shell company.
The $40,000 was routed there because it looked like an internal family transfer.
Investigators traced it to a brokerage account opened under false information.
The funds were frozen before they could move again.
For Sarah, the financial crisis finally had an endpoint.
The emotional one did not.
Daniel asked to speak with her privately.
They met in Elena’s empty conference room.
“I’m going to accept whatever happens,” he said.
Sarah said nothing.
“I know saying sorry is insulting at this point.”
“Yes.”
He nodded.
“I kept telling myself I was building something for us. But I was building something so I wouldn’t feel dependent on you.”
“You weren’t dependent on me.”
“I felt like I was.”
“That was yours to fix.”
“I know.”
He looked toward the window.
“I never slept with Ashley.”
Sarah believed him.
Strangely, it did not help.
“You made her more important than me in every way that mattered.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Sarah continued.
“You gave her our home, our money, our private information, and the morning our daughter was coming into the world, you gave her my time.”
Daniel cried quietly.
Sarah stood.
“I’m filing for divorce.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
Three months later, the court approved a structured parenting arrangement while the financial case continued. Daniel began therapy and accepted responsibility without asking Sarah to reconcile.
Ashley faced multiple civil claims and a criminal investigation related to financial fraud and identity misuse.
The money was largely recovered.
Sarah and Lily returned home after Ashley’s occupancy claim collapsed under the evidence.
On the first peaceful night back, Sarah opened the nursery closet.
It was empty except for Lily’s clothes.
Then she noticed a small envelope taped to the back wall.
It had been hidden behind Ashley’s dresses.
