Chapter 1 - THE RED BUTTON

Marissa Hale knew something was wrong before she reached the backyard.

The house was too quiet.

Not empty.

Quiet.

The kind of quiet that suggested people were deliberately staying out of sight.

She had left the charity luncheon early because the keynote speaker canceled and the final donor meeting moved online. Caleb thought she would be gone until six.

It was 2:41.

Marissa entered through the kitchen.

Two wineglasses sat on the island.

One had lipstick on it.

Not hers.

She stopped.

Then heard laughter outside.

A woman.

Low.

Playful.

Familiar.

Marissa walked toward the glass doors.

The backyard opened in front of her.

Blue pool.

White stone patio.

Sunlight flashing off the water.

Caleb was in the pool.

Vanessa Cole was beside him.

Their shoulders were bare.

Their clothes were scattered across the patio.

Caleb’s shirt near the lounge chair.

His pants folded badly beside the pool steps.

Vanessa’s pale dress crumpled near the outdoor sofa.

Her sandals underneath Caleb’s towel.

For one second, Marissa could not understand the arrangement.

Then Vanessa leaned toward Caleb and laughed into his shoulder.

Something inside Marissa detonated.

“ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!”

Caleb spun around.

Vanessa screamed.

Caleb grabbed the pool edge.

“Marissa—”

She pushed through the door.

“WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?”

“Calm down.”

Wrong sentence.

Marissa stopped.

Caleb looked annoyed.

Actually annoyed.

As if her arrival were the inconvenience.

“Don’t make a scene.”

Marissa’s face changed.

“A scene?”

Vanessa moved backward in the water.

“Marissa, please.”

Marissa looked at her.

Vanessa Cole.

Neighbor.

Dinner guest.

Woman who borrowed serving platters and returned them with handwritten thank-you notes.

Woman who sat beside Marissa at the neighborhood foundation gala two months earlier and said:

You’re lucky. Caleb looks at you like you’re still newlyweds.

Now she was naked enough in Marissa’s pool that her clothes were twenty feet away.

Marissa laughed once.

It sounded wrong even to her.

Then she saw the heavy tailoring scissors on the patio table.

She had been cutting outdoor cushion fabric there that morning.

She grabbed them.

Vanessa’s face went white.

“Marissa. No.”

Marissa picked up Vanessa’s dress.

“THIS?”

“Stop!”

SNIP.

The first cut went straight through the waist.

Vanessa screamed.

“That’s my dress!”

SNIP.

Marissa cut through the bodice.

SNIP.

One sleeve dropped to the patio.

Caleb shouted:

“What the hell are you doing?!”

Marissa snatched up his shirt.

“Cleaning.”

She cut it in half.

Caleb pushed himself toward the pool steps.

Marissa grabbed his pants next.

SNIP.

“Marissa!”

SNIP.

“STOP!”

She looked at him.

“Why?”

Then she cut through one leg.

Vanessa started crying.

“Please, I need my clothes.”

Marissa picked up the remaining pile.

More cutting.

Fabric fluttered onto the stone.

Caleb started climbing out.

Marissa pointed the closed scissors toward the shredded clothing.

“STAY IN THE POOL.”

He froze.

Not because she threatened him.

Because he suddenly realized she was not crying.

Not pleading.

Not asking whether he loved Vanessa.

She was furious in a way he had never seen.

Controlled enough to frighten him.

Marissa threw the last ruined pieces onto the patio.

Then she looked toward the wall beside the outdoor kitchen.

A red button sat beneath a clear safety cover.

Caleb saw where she was looking.

His entire face changed.

“Marissa.”

She walked toward it.

“No.”

He moved closer to the pool edge.

“MARISSA, DON’T.”

Vanessa looked between them.

“What is that?”

Marissa flipped the safety cover.

Caleb’s voice cracked.

“DON’T TOUCH THAT!”

Marissa looked at him.

For the first time, she noticed something beyond panic.

Fear.

Not fear of embarrassment.

Fear of discovery.

That changed everything.

She slammed the button.

A deafening alarm erupted across the property.

Vanessa screamed.

Caleb ducked instinctively.

Within seconds, doors opened along neighboring properties.

Security staff began running through the side access.

Two maintenance workers came from the guesthouse.

The caretaker emerged from the garden path.

Then neighbors started arriving near the fence, drawn by the alarm.

More people.

More witnesses.

Vanessa covered herself in the water.

Caleb looked around in absolute panic.

Marissa stood beside the red button, breathing hard.

May you like

And while everyone stared at the naked couple trapped in the pool, Marissa realized something far more important than the affair.

Caleb had known exactly what that button would summon.
