Chapter 9 - THE SETTLEMENT

The divorce took fourteen months.

Long enough for anger to become expensive.

Short enough for truth to stay sharp.

Caleb eventually settled the corporate claims separately.

He repaid a large portion of unsupported expenses.

Resigned from his informal advisory role around Hale Family Properties.

Waived all claims based on the draft postnuptial and trust amendments.

The company did not pursue every possible theory.

Some charges were gray.

Some evidence incomplete.

Maya called settlement “the adult art of refusing to spend five dollars proving someone owes you three.”

Marissa hated the sentence.

Then used it twice.

Vanessa and Eric dissolved their business partnership but did not immediately divorce.

That surprised everyone.

Marissa heard they attempted counseling.

She felt nothing useful about it.

Good.

Caleb and Vanessa did not stay together.

Also unsurprising.

The fantasy had depended on Marissa’s house, Marissa’s money, Marissa’s assumed silence.

Without those, reality was less romantic.

The divorce agreement preserved Marissa’s trust property.

Caleb kept fair marital assets.

No fantasy ruin.

No revenge bankruptcy.

Just separation.

At final mediation, Caleb asked to speak privately.

Marissa agreed for five minutes.

He looked thinner.

Older.

“I did love you.”

Marissa almost laughed.

Then didn’t.

“I believe you.”

He looked surprised.

“That’s worse somehow.”

“Yes.”

He swallowed.

“I thought you’d never leave.”

Marissa stared.

“That’s not love.”

“No.”

“What is it?”

He looked down.

May you like

“Entitlement.”

That was the first word he said in fourteen months that felt fully true.
