Chapter 7 - VANESSA'S HUSBAND

Vanessa’s husband, Eric Cole, asked to meet Marissa.

She almost refused.

Then agreed.

They sat in a hotel café.

Eric looked exhausted.

“I’m not here to compare pain,” he said.

“Good.”

“I’m here because Vanessa used our company too.”

Marissa looked up.

Eric co-owned Cole Design Group with Vanessa.

The $180,000 residential contract Caleb prepared would have run through that company.

Eric had no idea.

He showed Marissa emails.

Vanessa told him Hale Family Properties was considering a major design-retainer expansion.

She used that expected contract to secure a small business line of credit.

Forty thousand dollars.

Now the contract was collapsing.

Eric had debt.

Another person pulled into Caleb’s invented future.

Marissa asked:

“Did Vanessa know the contract wasn’t approved?”

Eric closed his eyes.

“Eventually.”

Same answer.

People often know enough to stop long before they stop.

Eric continued.

“She thought if Caleb moved into the house after divorce, the contract would happen anyway.”

Marissa laughed bitterly.

“So everybody was spending my future before I agreed to have one.”

Eric looked down.

“Yes.”

He handed over one final document.

A text from Caleb to Vanessa:

Once Marissa blows up publicly, nobody will question why I need legal protections around occupancy.

Marissa stopped.

There.

The pool affair was not intentionally staged for discovery.

But Caleb had contemplated what would happen if they were caught.

He believed Marissa’s anger would help his narrative.

Her cutting the clothes.

Her pressing the alarm.

He had almost gotten exactly what he wanted.

Except the red button preserved the prior footage too.

His plan ate itself.
