Chapter 6 - CALEB'S DEFENSE

Caleb hired attorney Gregory Lane.

Smart move.

Gregory did not deny the affair.

He separated personal misconduct from financial allegations immediately.

“Adultery is not corporate fraud,” he said in the first settlement meeting.

Maya answered:

“Correct. Forged authorization might be.”

Gregory argued:

Marissa had historically delegated household management to Caleb.

She knew Vanessa performed design consulting.

She allowed broad use of the property for company functions.

She signed prior expense authorizations without reviewing each line.

Therefore, Caleb believed he had implied discretion.

Weak morally.

Not ridiculous legally.

Then came the surprise.

Caleb produced emails from Marissa.

Handle whatever needs handling at the house.

Use your judgment.

Don't bother me with small vendor issues.

Maya read them carefully.

Marissa felt sick.

Because she had written them.

Not about trust amendments.

Not about six-figure contracts.

But enough to create gray.

Maya looked at her after the meeting.

“This is why facts matter more than rage.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Marissa stared.

The clothing scissors.

The alarm.

The neighborhood spectacle.

Those were emotionally satisfying.

Now she needed precision.

Caleb could not be punished for everything simply because he betrayed her.

Each act had to stand on its own.

That discipline became important.

They narrowed the claims.

Unauthorized signature use.

Misrepresented trust authority.

Improper company charges.

Potential breach of fiduciary duties in corporate expense management.

The affair remained divorce evidence.

Not a substitute for financial proof.

Then Caleb made his own public move.

He told friends Marissa had become “volatile.”

Mentioned the scissors.

Mentioned the alarm.

Left out the trust documents.

Predictable.

Marissa did not respond publicly.

Instead, she preserved the pool footage.

May you like

All of it.

Including the thirty minutes before she arrived.
