Chapter 14 - THE LAUNDRY ROOM

Eighteen months after the incident, Michael entered the family laundry room again.
Emily was there.
Ethan was almost four.
The court had expanded Michael’s parenting time.
The marriage remained undecided.
Michael looked at the washer.
Door shut.
Normal.
Ethan ran in carrying socks.
Emily tensed automatically.
Michael noticed.
He crouched.
“Clothes go in. Ethan stays out.”
Ethan dumped socks on the floor.
“No.”
Michael inhaled.
Old reflex.
Challenge.
Then he smiled slightly.
“Okay. Socks can wait.”
He did not grab him.
Did not raise his voice.
Did not teach a lesson.
Five minutes later Ethan returned and helped.
That was the real test.
Not whether Michael could control a child.
Whether he could survive not being obeyed immediately.
Emily saw it.
Said nothing.
Later Michael asked:
“Did you notice?”
“Yes.”
He almost asked:
Does that mean you trust me?
He stopped.
