Chapter 8 - THE PHONE CALL
The call Michael answered while Ethan was inside the washer came from his brother, Jason.
That became important because Jason remembered the conversation.
Michael answered:
“What?”
Jason heard crying.
“What’s that?”
“Ethan.”
“What’s wrong?”
“Teaching him not to climb in the washer.”
Silence.
Jason asked:
“What does that mean?”
Michael answered:
“He’s inside it.”
Jason thought he was joking.
“You’re insane.”
Michael laughed once.
“He’s fine. It’s unplugged.”
Then Emily screamed Ethan’s name in the background.
Michael said:
“Gotta go.”
Call duration:
twenty-nine seconds.
That meant Michael was outside the laundry room for at least part of the confinement.
Maybe not all twenty-nine seconds.
But long enough to contradict his first statement.
Then Jason told investigators:
“I should have said more.”
He had called Michael insane jokingly.
He did not hang up and call Emily.
Why?
Because he trusted Michael.
Another adult assumption.
Then Jason revealed something else.
Months earlier Michael sent him a video of Ethan crying outside the dark garage.
Caption:
Future rule follower.
Jason reacted with a laughing emoji.
Now he stared at the old message.
He did not remember it as cruelty.
That was the problem.
The family had socialized intimidation as a parenting joke.
