Chapter 5 - THE FIVE CLIPS

Clip one:
Ethan reaching toward detergent pods locked behind a cabinet.
Michael lifted him, pointed to the cabinet, then placed him briefly in the empty sink basin.
He said:
“Bad things happen when you touch.”
Ethan cried.
Clip two:
Ethan opening the dryer door.
Michael sat him inside the dry dryer drum with the door left open.
Five seconds.
Then lifted him out.
Clip three:
Laundry basket.
Closet door closed.
Seven seconds.
Clip four:
Michael physically blocked the hallway and let Ethan cry rather than return to Emily.
No confinement.
Clip five:
the washing machine.
The most severe.
The only one where the appliance door was closed.
The police did not pretend every clip carried equal legal weight.
Neither did Daniel.
Pattern mattered, but precision mattered too.
Then Emily asked Michael:
“How many times?”
He said:
“Those.”
“You’re sure?”
“Yes.”
She stared.
He corrected:
“Maybe one garage thing.”
“There it is.”
Michael became angry.
“I was there.”
“You keep saying that like it makes terror educational.”
“He was safe.”
“He didn’t know he was safe.”
“He’s two. He doesn’t know anything.”
Emily went still.
“That is exactly why.”
Michael looked away.
The room became quiet.
Then he said:
“You think I wanted to hurt him?”
“No.”
Emily’s answer surprised him.
“I think you wanted to control him.”

That hurt more.
Because he could not immediately deny it.
