Chapter 11 - VANESSA'S MOTHER

Vanessa’s mother, Diane Cole, entered the story unexpectedly.

She had worked motel housekeeping for twenty-seven years.

Eleanor learned that from a background profile.

Vanessa rarely discussed it.

When asked why, Vanessa became furious.

“My mother has nothing to do with this.”

Eleanor said:

“Maybe she has everything to do with it.”

Vanessa stood.

“Don’t psychoanalyze me.”

Fair.

But later, in testimony, Vanessa admitted:

she grew up ashamed of poverty.

Motel rooms.

Uniforms.

Secondhand clothes.

Rich guests treated Diane like furniture.

Vanessa promised herself:

never again.

Then she entered luxury hospitality and overcorrected.

Instead of rejecting class contempt, she joined the side with power.

She began policing anything that reminded her of where she came from.

Pain became hierarchy.
