Chapter 7 - THE STAFF WHO WERE AFRAID TO SPEAK
Once Vanessa’s authority paused, employees started talking.
Not all against her.
Some praised:
high standards,
fast promotions,
excellent guest recovery,
revenue growth.
Vanessa was not incompetent.
That complicated everything.
Then housekeeper Maria Evans testified.
Vanessa had once said:
“Guests don’t pay six hundred a night to see cleaning carts.”
Reasonable.
Then required cleaning staff to hide in service halls during VIP arrivals.
Annoying, but operational.
Then another rule:
Employees with visibly worn shoes could not cross the lobby.
That became class-based humiliation.
A bellman, Patrick, said Vanessa once sent him home because his coat sleeve was frayed.
He could not afford a replacement until payday.
Hotel had uniform budget.
She refused advance approval.
Then wrote him up for appearance.
Pattern.
