Chapter 5 - THE COMPLAINT FILE

Eleanor opened a folder.
Vanessa saw copies.
Guest complaints.
Security reports.
Internal emails.
One case:
a veteran with a prepaid reservation had been denied early lobby access because his clothing was wet and worn.
Another:
two teenagers delivering flowers were removed through service corridors after Vanessa said they “looked wrong for the lobby.”
Another:
a homeless woman was sprayed with a hose near a loading dock.
Vanessa stared.
“I didn’t order that.”
“Not personally.”
“Then why is this about me?”
Eleanor handed her an email.
VANESSA:
Stop letting street people linger near guest sightlines. I don’t care how you solve it.
Vanessa read.
“That was about security.”
Eleanor replied:
“It was about appearance.”
Then another:
Luxury is ruined when guests are reminded poverty exists ten feet away.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Vanessa looked furious.
“That was internal.”
Eleanor answered:
“Internal language becomes external behavior.”

Then she pointed to the driveway.
“Tonight demonstrated that beautifully.”
