Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN IN THE AFFIDAVIT
Jonah had not vanished because Logan harmed him.
He boarded a flight to Toronto after receiving a letter from Carter Behavioral's lawyers threatening personal liability for theft of trade secrets. Frightened, he left his company phone behind and traveled on his private passport. Canadian counsel confirmed he was safe but unwilling to testify without legal protection.
Logan used the false alarm effectively. He accused Dana of implying a disappearance to poison the guardianship hearing.
At that hearing, Dr. Nathan Wells testified that Emily suffered panic attacks, dissociation, and episodes of distorted recall. Logan attended most sessions and often supplied timelines when Emily became confused.
“Did you ever interview Mrs. Carter without her husband present?” Dana asked.
“On several occasions.”
“How many?”
Dr. Wells checked his notes. “Three.”
“Out of forty-one appointments?”
He hesitated. “Yes.”
Emily took the stand.
Marcus placed her old affidavit in front of her. “Is that your signature?”
“Yes.”
“You swore your sister invented accusations against your husband.”
“I did.”
“Were you lying then, or are you lying now?”
The question was designed to leave no safe answer.
Emily looked at Olivia, then deliberately looked away. She could not build her freedom on her sister's courage.
“I lied then,” she said. “Logan said if I accused him, he would have Olivia charged for entering our house during an earlier argument. He showed me edited footage. I believed him.”
Marcus asked whether Logan physically moved her hand across the affidavit.
“No.”
“So you chose to sign a false sworn statement.”
“Yes.”
Emily did not ask the judge to call her blameless. She explained the threat and accepted that the lie damaged her credibility.
The judge denied Logan full guardianship but appointed an independent temporary evaluator. Emily retained control of daily decisions, while the disputed corporate shares were placed under a neutral custodian until capacity and coercion could be assessed.
Neither spouse could vote them.
Outside court, Olivia apologized for the switch.
“You agreed because you were terrified. I should have found another way.”
Emily shook her head. “It bought the time I asked for. But you can't keep becoming me every time I am afraid.”
That afternoon, Dana obtained Dr. Wells's raw session recordings under court order.

In three separate sessions, Emily had said Logan controlled her medication and sometimes doubled her nightly dose.
Those statements did not appear anywhere in his final notes.
