Chapter 11 - THE CRIMINAL CASE
Marianne accepted a negotiated plea.
The evidence was strong.
Video.
Witnesses.
Medical records.
The cane.
No serious fetal injury.
No need for inflated charges.
Consequences included:
probation,
a short custodial component,
anger intervention,
no-contact restrictions during Clara’s pregnancy,
and restitution for medical costs.
At sentencing, Marianne apologized.
Then said:
“I believed I was protecting my niece from a life of dependency.”
Clara looked at the judge.
The judge asked Marianne:
“By striking her?”
Marianne lowered her eyes.
“No.”
Then Clara gave a short statement.
“You thought my husband’s disability made my marriage smaller.”
Pause.
“You thought pregnancy made me more trapped.”
Pause.
“And you thought family gave you permission to correct me.”
Marianne cried.
Clara did not soften.
Then:
“You were wrong three times.”
That was enough.
No speech about Eli’s money.
No billionaire revenge.
