Chapter 5 - THE PREGNANCY
Clara’s pregnancy was wanted.
Planned after Eli’s doctors said his recovery was stable enough that daily life would not become medically chaotic.
The family assumed otherwise.
Marianne said:
“She trapped herself.”
Victor said:
“Timing is terrible.”
Brooke asked whether the baby could inherit Eli’s eye condition.
It could not.
His blindness was injury-related.
No one bothered asking.
Then Clara’s prenatal care became another subject of family commentary.
She tired easily.
Normal.
She stopped drinking wine.
Normal.
She left gatherings early.
Marianne called it:
dramatic.
Then came the private family gathering at the mansion.
Victor had asked everyone to attend because Cole Architectural Materials needed family approval for a proposed asset sale.
Not formal shareholder approval from Clara.
She owned no voting shares.
But her late mother had left her a non-voting economic interest through a small family trust.
Marianne wanted Clara to sign a waiver releasing future claims to certain trust distributions tied to the sale.
Clara refused to sign without counsel.
Marianne snapped.
“You always need a lawyer now.”
Clara answered:
“Yes.”
Then Marianne looked toward Eli sitting near the window.
Dark glasses.
White cane.
Silent.
“Because he tells you to.”
“No.”
“You used to trust family.”
“I used to sign things without reading them.”
Victor interrupted:
“This is routine.”
Clara said:
“Then it can survive review.”
That refusal lit the fuse.
Marianne accused Eli of manipulating Clara.
Clara defended him.
Brooke laughed.
Victor told Clara not to be childish.

What followed was the fifteen seconds nobody in the family could later explain away.
