Chapter 8 - WHY HE KEPT THE GLASSES
The first reason was security.
During Eli’s recovery, Mason Strategic was negotiating a contested restructuring involving a logistics company with aggressive creditors.
Eli had received threats.
Not movie threats.
Anonymous calls.
A photographed envelope.
Someone following his driver once.
His security team advised keeping medical status private until travel patterns stabilized.
Reasonable.
The second reason was business.
Rumors that Eli remained incapacitated gave his deputies room to negotiate without counterparties gaming his return.
More questionable.
The third reason was personal.
He began noticing how the Coles behaved around him.
Victor discussed debt problems in the same room because he assumed Eli could not read documents left on tables.
Brooke texted insults while sitting across from him.
Marianne rolled her eyes directly at Clara when Eli spoke.
At first he ignored it.
Then he began remembering details.
Not recording secretly.
Not setting traps.
Just noticing.
Then one evening Victor said:
“Mason would never understand the warehouse deal even if he could see the numbers.”
Eli almost laughed.
His firm owned part of Victor’s debt.
That was the moment secrecy became satisfying.
And that was the problem.
Clara asked:
“Did you enjoy knowing something they didn’t?”
Eli answered honestly.
“Yes.”
“Did you enjoy them underestimating you?”
“Yes.”
“Even when they were using me to do it?”
Silence.
He had not thought of it that way.
Then Clara said:
“You got to feel powerful while I got to be embarrassed for marrying you.”
That sentence dismantled his defense.
He had carried the secret as armor.
Clara had carried the social cost.
