Chapter 3 - THE STORY EVELYN WANTED POLICE TO HEAR

Officer Grant arrived first.

Then another unit.

No sirens.

No spectacle.

Daniel appreciated that.

He told the story once.

Lauren told hers.

Evelyn told a completely different one.

She said Max was wandering unsupervised near Daniel’s property.

She feared he would be hit by a car.

She placed him in the SUV for safety.

The medication and blanket, she claimed, had already been inside the crate Daniel left outside.

Daniel stared.

“That crate lives in my garage.”

Officer Grant asked:

“Garage locked?”

“Yes.”

“Any signs of entry?”

“Don’t know yet.”

Then Evelyn said Daniel had a history of “losing control.”

Lauren flinched.

Officer Grant looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?”

Evelyn answered:

“He screams. He follows Lauren. He uses the dog to show up.”

Daniel nearly interrupted.

Stopped.

Let her speak.

Then Lauren said quietly:

“He has yelled.”

Daniel looked at her.

True.

During separation, he had shouted.

Once punched the side of his truck after Lauren changed the locks without telling him.

Not good.

Not the same as violence toward her.

Still.

Then Evelyn continued:

“Lauren has been afraid to report him because he always makes himself look reasonable.”

There.

That sentence was designed to survive contradiction.

If Daniel stayed calm:

proof he was calculating.

If he got angry:

proof he was dangerous.

Perfect trap.

Then Officer Grant asked Lauren:

“Did you ask Ms. Cross to retrieve the dog?”

Lauren shook her head.

“No.”

“Did she tell you she was going to?”

“No.”

Evelyn turned.

“I was helping.”

Lauren looked at her.

“Why was Max’s medicine in your car?”

Evelyn’s voice softened.

“Lauren, don’t let him turn this.”

Daniel saw it.

Not an answer.

Then police checked the cabin.

Back door showed no forced entry.

But a side window had been unlocked.

Daniel rarely used it.

Inside:

medicine cabinet open.

Dog leash missing.

A spare key box disturbed.

Then security camera.

Daniel had one covering the driveway.

Footage was gone from 10:52 to 11:24.

Cloud history showed a manual deletion from an account.

Username:

DanielWalker.

Password access could have been stolen.

Or Daniel deleted it himself.

Bad.

Then his internet provider records showed login from another IP during the deletion.

A coffee shop near Lauren’s house.

That helped.

Who had been there?

Evelyn’s phone location placed her in that area around 10:50.

Not proof she logged in.

Enough for more questions.

Then police found another problem.

Evelyn had photographed Max inside Daniel’s yard before taking him.

Time stamp:

11:03.

He was not loose near the road.

He was in the fenced yard.

She claimed the gate was open.

Photo showed it closed behind him.

Her story cracked.

Then she changed it.

“He looked distressed.”

Daniel laughed once.

Officer Grant looked at him.

He stopped.

Evelyn continued:

“I thought Daniel was neglecting him.”

Then Lauren asked:

“So why didn’t you call animal control?”

Silence.

May you like

There.

Lauren finally asked the right question.
