Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT MAX DISAPPEARED
Forensic reconstruction of Max’s disappearance took weeks.
Evelyn left Lauren’s house at 10:31 a.m.
Drove to a coffee shop near Daniel’s cabin at 10:47.
Logged into Daniel’s cloud camera account using credentials saved in a browser from months earlier.
How did she get them?
Lauren had once used Daniel’s tablet during the marriage and later copied shared password notes during divorce preparation.
Evelyn helped organize the digital file.
She had access.
At 10:52, camera deletion began.
At 10:58, Evelyn drove toward Daniel’s cabin.
At 11:03, she photographed Max in the fenced yard.
At 11:06, she entered through the unlocked side window.
No break-in damage.
Then:
medicine cabinet.
Crate.
Leash.
Collar removed.
Why remove the collar?
To make Max look abandoned or unidentifiable if seen.
Then she loaded him into the SUV.
No harm.
Max probably followed because she knew him.
He had met her many times during the marriage.
Then Evelyn drove to a grocery store.
Bought steak.
Then to Lauren’s house.
Placed steak on table.
Why?
Her eventual explanation:
for lunch.
No one believed it.
The working theory:
she intended to use pieces to stage a path or lure Max into a specific part of the property.
Then one unsent draft on her phone.
Photo caption:
FOUND THIS SWEET BOY WANDERING AGAIN. SOME PEOPLE DON’T DESERVE DOGS.
No recipient.
Maybe social media.
Maybe evidence narrative.
Then another draft to Lauren:
I DIDN’T WANT TO SCARE YOU BUT MAX SHOWED UP AGAIN. DANIEL IS SPIRALING.
There.
The plan.
Make Daniel look unstable.
Make Max look neglected.
Bring Max to Lauren.
Create a documented event.
Then the fake injury claim would come later.
Maybe.
Evelyn had prepared it.
Then Daniel showed up early.
Why?
A neighbor called him after seeing an SUV near the cabin.
That was the variable Evelyn missed.
Then she improvised.
Blame Daniel.
Call him frightening.
Put herself between him and Lauren.
Same method.
Different crisis.
Then Detective Grant said:
“People think complicated plans fail because criminals are stupid.”
Daniel looked at her.
“And?”
“They usually fail because reality introduces someone they didn’t schedule.”
Neighbor.
Early return.
A dog barking at the wrong time.
Then Daniel asked:
“Can she be charged for taking Max?”
“Yes.”
“Like theft?”
“Property law treats animals as property in many contexts, but there may be additional offenses depending on entry, fraud, and intent.”
Daniel hated the property word.

Law needed categories.
