Evelyn’s attorney, Claire Morgan, built the strongest defense available.
No intent to steal Max permanently.
Concern for animal welfare.
No actual insurance claim filed.
No injury caused.
No money taken from Daniel in the incident.
Digital access may have come from credentials previously shared during marriage.
Fake screenshots could have been “illustrative composites” for Lauren’s documentation.
That last argument almost impressed Daniel.
Illustrative composites.
Lauren laughed when she heard.
Then Claire separated emotional manipulation from criminal conduct.
Evelyn may have been overinvolved.
May have charged undisclosed referral fees.
May have advised Lauren aggressively.
That did not make every relationship fraudulent.
True.
Then she attacked Daniel.
He had sent angry texts.
Driven past Lauren’s location.
Used Max to continue communication.
Shouted in the house when he discovered the dog missing.
A jury could see a volatile ex-husband and a friend trying—badly—to protect Lauren.
Plausible.
Then the prosecution found the money trail.
Cross Personal Strategy had a draft investor agreement.
Proposed investor:
Lauren Walker.
Investment:
$120,000.
Source description:
liquidity after resolution of deferred marital equity.
Evelyn expected Lauren to have $120,000 available if Daniel’s note disappeared or was reduced.
Then a private email between Evelyn and her sister:
ONCE SHE’S FREE OF HIM, SHE’LL HAVE CASH AND NO IDEA WHAT TO DO WITH IT.
Sister:
THAT SOUNDS TERRIBLE.
Evelyn:
IT’S TRUE.
Then:
SHE TRUSTS ME.
There.
Not proof of stealing.
Proof of motive to preserve dependency.
Then another:
MAX IS THE LAST STRING HE HAS.
That line changed everything.
Evelyn saw Max not as a dog.
As a “string.”
If she cut it, Daniel had less reason to contact Lauren.
If she used it to create a liability incident, maybe she could weaken his financial rights too.
Emotional and financial goals aligned.
Then Lauren read the email.
She did not cry.
Not immediately.
She sat still.
Then said:
“She called my marriage a cage.”
Detective Grant waited.
Lauren continued:
“And then built another one.”
That was the story.
Not that Daniel was secretly perfect.
He wasn’t.
