Chapter 9 - SOFIA WANTS LESSONS

Sofia had one question after the party.
“Can I dance for real?”
Elena immediately felt panic.
She pictured rehearsal rooms.
Perfection.
Late nights.
Directors yelling.
People discussing bodies as equipment.
Then she looked at Sofia.
Five.
Holding both of Elena’s heels by the straps.
“Maybe.”
Sofia frowned.
“That’s not yes.”
“No.”
Elena smiled.
“It’s not no either.”
They visited a neighborhood studio.
No elite academy.
The teacher had twelve children in a beginner class.
Half forgot left from right.
One stopped dancing to look out a window.
Perfect.
Sofia loved it.
After class she said:
“I want to do that every day.”
Elena answered:
“No.”
Sofia gasped.
“Why?”
“Because you also need to eat snacks and annoy me.”
Sofia laughed.
Two classes a week.
Enough.

Elena made herself one promise:
Sofia would never have to become exceptional to justify loving dance.
