Chapter 8 - THE FIRST FALL

Memory returned in fragments.

Not perfect replay.

Nora was careful not to turn fragments into certainty.

She worked with a neuropsychologist.

No hypnosis.

No recovered-memory spectacle.

She separated:

what she remembered,

what documents showed,

what others witnessed.

The blue folder contained a draft objection Nora had prepared.

Four years earlier, Graham and Julian wanted her to invest $3 million into a redevelopment project.

Nora’s adviser warned:

too concentrated,

family conflict,

weak collateral.

Nora decided no.

At the lake-house dinner, Graham argued.

“You trust strangers over me.”

“I trust process.”

Julian said:

“This is family money.”

Nora answered:

“It’s my grandmother’s money.”

Then Graham said:

“You’re humiliating us.”

Nora stood.

Picked up the folder.

“I’m sending this to Evelyn’s attorney.”

Graham grabbed the folder.

Nora pulled back.

Wine spilled.

Bottle rolled.

Then?

A blank.

Rachel remembered hearing shouting from the hall.

Then a crash.

She found Nora at the bottom of the short landing stairs.

Graham kneeling beside her.

Julian standing nearby.

Who pushed her?

No witness.

Nora’s memory returned as pressure at her shoulder.

But she could not identify whose hand.

That uncertainty mattered.

She refused to accuse without proof.

Then a new document surfaced.

Julian had texted Graham eleven minutes after the ambulance left:

She won’t remember the argument.

Graham replied:

Delete this.

Both messages remained in an old cloud backup recovered later under warrant.

Nora stared at the words.

They did not prove who caused the fall.

They proved the brothers immediately understood memory loss could protect them.
