Chapter 9 - THE COVERUP
Graham’s coverup began before the financial manipulation.
He told everyone Nora tripped while carrying wine.
Julian repeated it.
By the time Nora woke, the story had become family fact.
Doctors asked:
“Do you remember the fall?”
She said no.
Graham supplied the narrative.
Then every memory problem after discharge reinforced it.
Nora forgot a password.
Graham:
“See? You’re still foggy.”
Nora questioned an invoice.
“You approved it.”
She did not remember.
He showed her signature.
Real.
Nora became afraid of her own mind.
That was the theft.
Not literal memory removal.
Confidence in memory.
Graham learned that if he presented:
a document,
a confident explanation,
and one reference to her injury,
Nora often backed down.
Then he began doing it with finances.
“You asked for this allocation.”
“Remember? We discussed it.”
“You wanted more family exposure.”
Sometimes they had discussed it.
Sometimes he stretched a minor conversation into broad consent.
Sometimes paperwork carried genuine signatures without fully informed context.
No forged universe.
No hypnotic fraud.
A spouse exploiting asymmetry.
Then Nora asked Graham in a recorded attorney meeting:
“Did you ever tell me my doctor advised avoiding major financial decisions?”
He looked down.
“No.”
“Why?”
“I thought it would scare you.”
Nora laughed once.
“Protection again.”
He flinched.
Then:
“I was trying to keep things functioning.”
