Chapter 1 - THE ANNIVERSARY PAPERS

Emily Carter knew something was wrong before Michael arrived.

Their private anniversary room had been reserved for eight.

At eight twenty, the candles had burned lower.

At eight thirty-six, Michael walked in wearing a dark suit and carrying a legal envelope.

He did not kiss her.

He did not say happy anniversary.

He sat down and slid the papers across the table.

“Sign them.”

Emily stared at the heading.

PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE.

Her hand moved instinctively to her belly.

“I’m six months pregnant.”

Michael poured champagne.

“For me,” he said.

Then raised the glass.

“The baby was an accident.”

Emily felt as though the room had lost pressure.

“You wanted this baby.”

“I wanted us to work.”

“That isn’t what you said.”

She flipped through the pages with shaking fingers.

Ten days to vacate the condominium.

Confidentiality.

Property disclosures.

Then she looked up.

“You’re throwing me out in ten days?”

Michael leaned back.

“The condo isn’t yours.”

“It’s our home.”

“It’s company housing.”

“Then where am I supposed to go?”

His expression barely changed.

“Your father owns half the city.”

That was not an answer.

Emily turned another page.

“Why ten days?”

Michael lifted his glass.

“Jessica needs the condo.”

Emily stopped.

“Jessica?”

He said nothing.

“Jessica Vale?”

Michael’s silence confirmed it.

Emily’s eyes filled.

“Your mistress?”

He leaned forward.

“Don’t embarrass yourself. Just sign.”

She looked at the pen beside the papers.

For months she had suspected distance—late calls, trips, a new phone password.

Hearing the truth spoken without shame felt worse than discovering it.

Michael relaxed when she picked up the pen.

“To closing chapters,” he said.

Then—

BANG.

The private-room door opened.

David Carter walked in with Maya Chen, outside counsel to Carter Meridian’s board.

Michael’s smile vanished.

“What are you doing here?”

David dropped a sealed company folder on top of the divorce papers.

“You gave my pregnant daughter ten days to disappear?”

Michael stood.

“This is none of your business.”

Maya stepped forward.

“It became the board’s business.”

Michael went pale.

David broke the seal.

Michael lunged.

“Don’t open that.”

Emily froze.

David pulled out the first document.

“Jessica. Company money. A secret consulting firm.”

Michael’s face collapsed.

Emily slowly placed the pen on the table.

“Still want me to sign?”

Then Maya opened the folder to a payment schedule.

Total paid to Vale Strategic Integration:

$3,418,000.

And Michael stopped looking like a husband caught cheating.

He looked like a CEO watching his board arrive.
