Chapter 4 - JESSICA'S REAL JOB

Jessica Vale did not deny owning Harbor Ridge.

Her lawyer answered the board the next morning.

Jessica claimed the interest came through her late uncle’s independently managed trust and that her consulting role covered integration, not valuation.

Technically, that created arguments.

Then Jessica requested a private meeting with Emily.

Emily refused.

Maya approved a recorded meeting at the board counsel’s office instead.

Jessica arrived wearing a white suit and no visible fear.

“I’m sorry you found out like this.”

Emily almost laughed.

“About which part?”

Jessica folded her hands.

“Michael and I have been together eleven months.”

Emily’s throat tightened.

Jessica continued before emotion could take over.

“My North Vale interest predates him.”

“Did he know?”

“No.”

That answer came cleanly.

“Why hide it?”

“Because I knew how it would look.”

Emily stared.

“You were advising the buyer of a company you secretly owned.”

“I was advising integration.”

“You wanted closing to happen.”

“Yes.”

“Because you make fourteen million dollars.”

“Because it’s a good transaction.”

Smart answer.

Then Jessica produced work records.

She had identified real customer and integration risks the internal team missed.

Maya confirmed much of the work had value.

Emily hated that the truth was complicated.

Then Emily asked:

“Did Michael promise you the condo?”

Jessica’s expression shifted.

“He said it would be available after the divorce.”

“At half market price.”

“That was his number, not mine.”

Another important distinction.

Then Jessica leaned closer.

“You think Michael is the only person using marriage to move business?”

Emily’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?”

Jessica smiled faintly.

“Ask your father when he first knew about us.”

Emily went still.

Jessica stood.

“He did not come to that restaurant because he suddenly discovered invoices.”

Then she walked out.

Emily called David immediately.

He did not answer.

Maya did.

“I’m with him.”

“Put him on.”

Silence.

Then David’s voice.

“Emily.”

“How long have you known?”

He did not ask what she meant.

That was the answer.

“Dad.”

“About two months.”

Emily closed her eyes.

“You knew my husband was sleeping with her for two months?”

“I suspected. Then confirmed.”

“And you didn’t tell me?”

“I needed proof of the company conflict before confronting Michael.”

Emily felt cold.

“So my marriage was evidence.”

“No.”

“That is exactly what you just said.”

David started to explain.

Emily ended the call.

For the second time in twenty-four hours, a powerful man told himself he could delay truth because business timing mattered more.

And this time, the man was her father.
