Chapter 10 - WHAT CALEB SAW
After Richard freed himself, Caleb finally looked at the room as if seeing it from outside.
His father restrained.
Dog food on his cardigan.
Amber holding her cheek.
The licensing papers spread beside the wine.
Caleb put down the glass.
“Dad, let me untie you.”
Richard looked at him.
“You had ten minutes.”
Caleb flinched.
Then untied the remaining restraint anyway.
Amber snapped:
“He hit me!”
Richard answered:
“Yes.”
One slap.
After he had freed himself.
The family attorney later told him not to romanticize that.
Stopping abuse did not require punishing Amber.
Richard accepted that.
He was not proud of the slap.
He was proud of standing up.
Different things.
Richard’s first instinct after the incident was to remove Caleb as CEO.
His attorney asked:
“On what basis?”
“He stood there.”
“Family reason or governance reason?”
Richard stopped.
Important distinction.
Caleb’s conduct at home was terrible.
That did not automatically mean he was incompetent to run the company.
Richard hated the separation.

Punishing business authority for personal betrayal would have repeated the same confusion of roles the family was trying to fix.
