Chapter 7 - CALEB'S SILENCE
Caleb knew his father was sharper than Amber claimed.
He also knew Richard was slower than before surgery.
Both things were true.
Caleb feared another medical crisis.
He feared the licensing deal failing.
He feared fighting with Amber.
Most of all, he feared telling his father:
You are no longer the only person who gets to define the Vale brand.
That conversation should have happened directly.
Instead Caleb let Amber’s dementia narrative do the work.
If Richard was declining, then transition was not betrayal.
It was necessity.
Caleb could inherit control without admitting he wanted it.
That was his moral shortcut.
When Amber said:
“Your father gets confused.”
Caleb answered:
“Sometimes.”
When Richard said:
“I’m fine.”
Caleb answered:
“I know.”

He gave each person enough agreement to postpone conflict.
Then conflict became the structure of the house.
