Chapter 10 - THE COMPANY APARTMENT

The apartment was technically owned by Daniel’s employer and leased for executives working late downtown.

Personal use was permitted within broad limits.

But permanent modifications required approval.

The child room had not been approved.

Daniel had installed:

shelving,

paint,

additional locks on one closet,

custom built-ins.

Nothing criminal.

A company policy issue.

When HR learned after Claire requested access documentation, Daniel had to explain.

He took personal leave.

Not fired immediately.

Then another question surfaced.

Why had Daniel told Claire he “lived alone” there for work if he used the room for personal rituals?

Because he did live alone physically.

No affair.

No second family.

No hidden child.

But emotionally, Claire said:

“You weren’t alone.”

Daniel nodded.

He had built a private family history Claire could not enter.

Then Dr. Morris assessed him.

She did not diagnose him from one room.

She explored:

complicated grief features,

compulsive preservation,

avoidance,

shame,

control behaviors,

and depressive symptoms.

No dramatic label solved the story.

Daniel’s treatment focused on behavior.

Can he tolerate change?

Can he grieve Emma without preserving Lily?

Can he speak openly instead of building secret containers?

Can he accept memories changing?

Then Claire set conditions.

The apartment room had to be dismantled.

Not immediately destroyed.

Documented first.

Emma’s authentic belongings separated from Lily’s.

Duplicates donated or discarded.

Lily’s items returned.

Emma’s memorial items offered to Maya or stored transparently.

No more secret purchasing.

No more photographing Lily’s room without permission.

Daniel agreed.

Then he asked:

“Can I keep one version of the room in photos?”

Claire looked at Dr. Morris.

The therapist turned the question back.

“What purpose would the photos serve?”

Daniel thought.

“To remember what I did.”

Not Emma.

What he did.

Claire agreed to a limited record kept with his treatment materials.

Accountability.

Not shrine.

Then the locked closet was opened.

Inside was one final layer.

Dozens of unopened birthday cards.

May you like

All addressed:

TO EMMA.
