Chapter 13 - EMMA'S REAL THINGS

Maya agreed to receive some of Emma’s authentic belongings Daniel had preserved.

A stuffed fox.

Three books.

A blue sweater.

A photo album.

Not everything.

She said:

“I don’t want my house to become a museum either.”

They chose together through a mediator.

Some items went to Rebecca.

Some stayed with Daniel.

One box was donated.

No sacred rule.

Then Claire learned the small wooden jewelry box in the apartment was not a duplicate of Lily’s by chance.

Daniel bought Lily’s original box because it resembled one Emma owned.

Years later he purchased an identical replacement online for the apartment.

He had unknowingly reversed the causal story.

Claire thought:

he copied Lily to make Emma.

Actually:

he sometimes chose things for Lily because they reminded him of Emma.

That realization hurt differently.

How much of Lily’s childhood had been shaped by a dead sister?

Daniel reviewed.

Purple lamp.

Jewelry box.

One brand of raincoat.

A particular stuffed rabbit.

Then he stopped.

Claire said:

“No.”

He looked up.

“We are not going to audit every toy she ever owned.”

Why not?

Because that could become another obsession.

Some overlaps were intentional.

Some coincidence.

Some ordinary parental preference.

The goal was not to rewrite Lily’s whole childhood as contaminated.

Then Lily asked about the owl shirt.

Daniel laughed softly.

“That one was all you.”

She smiled.

Good.

Identity restored by small things.

Then Lily chose one Emma object to keep.

A book.

Charlotte’s Web.

Not because Daniel suggested it.

Because she liked the cover.

Claire asked:

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Can I write my name in it?”

Daniel’s face tightened.

Old preservation instinct.

Claire watched.

He said:

“Yes.”

Lily wrote:

LILY BENNETT

beneath:

EMMA REED

Two names.

Same book.

No erasure.

Daniel cried.

Lily rolled her eyes.

May you like

“Dad, it’s just a book.”

Maybe that was exactly what he needed to hear.
