Chapter 9 - THE BUILDING CAMERA
Daniel believed the executive suite was private.
Mostly.
But the building had elevator cameras.
Lobby cameras.
Parking garage cameras.
No camera inside the suite.
Enough.
Footage showed Daniel bringing Emily in at 9:14 p.m.
Emily walked reluctantly.
At 9:16, she tried to leave the elevator vestibule.
Daniel blocked her.
At 11:03 the next morning, Daniel left alone.
Returned with clothing and food.
At 7:40 p.m., he left again.
At 8:12, a cleaning contractor entered the floor.
Her name was Rosa Martinez.
She heard crying.
Knocked.
Emily answered through the door:
“Please call my dad.”
Rosa tried the handle.
Locked.
Then Daniel returned.
He told Rosa:
“My wife is having an episode. Please give us privacy.”
Rosa left.
Then called building management.
Management called Daniel’s firm contact.
The contact said Daniel had authorization to use the suite.
No one called police.
Rosa felt guilty.
But she had documented the incident in a cleaning log.
Timestamp.
Then the next morning, Rosa returned early.
Daniel was gone.
She used a master service key.
Found Emily.
Opened the door.
Emily ran.
Rosa gave her cash and called a rideshare because Emily begged not to involve building security.
That was how she reached the ER.
Rosa became the witness Daniel never planned for.
She almost did not testify.
Daniel’s firm sent her employer a letter reminding everyone of confidentiality obligations concerning executive tenants.
Not an illegal threat.
Still intimidating.
Rosa called Lewis.
“Am I going to lose my job?”
Lewis answered:
“I can’t promise you won’t face workplace consequences. I can tell you a subpoena protects your obligation to tell the truth.”
Rosa hesitated.
Then said:
“She asked me to call her dad.”
That decided it.
Her cleaning log also contained a detail nobody noticed at first:
DOOR LOCKED FROM OUTSIDE BADGE SYSTEM. WOMAN INSIDE ASKED TO LEAVE.
Rosa had written it immediately because she feared management would blame her for entering the wrong suite.
