Chapter 1 - TWO HUNDRED WITNESSES

Derek Morgan’s hand was already at the back of Claire’s head when she realized the joke was not going to stop at frosting on her nose.

He shoved.

Claire’s face disappeared into the upper tier of the wedding cake.

White frosting burst across her hair, cheeks, neckline, and pearl-buttoned gown.

A hundred people gasped.

The other hundred laughed because Derek did.

He pulled her upright.

“Smile, Claire.”

Frosting slid from her eyelashes.

Patricia Morgan pointed from the champagne table.

“Look at her!”

More laughter.

Claire stood perfectly still.

Derek leaned toward her ear.

“Don’t embarrass me.”

That was when the humiliation changed.

Not because the cake mattered.

Because his voice did.

Low.

Controlled.

Familiar.

Claire wiped frosting from her eyes.

Derek lifted his champagne glass.

“It was just a joke!”

Across the ballroom, Claire looked at Lena Carter.

Her maid of honor.

Lena touched the sealed envelope inside her purse.

Claire gave one small nod.

Derek pulled Claire against him by the waist.

“Good girl.”

Claire stepped out of his grip.

Then reached beneath the pearl button near her neckline.

A tiny audio recorder came free.

Derek stopped smiling.

Claire looked at it.

“Perfect.”

Lena crossed the marble floor.

Placed the legal envelope into Claire’s hand.

Derek stared.

“What the hell is that?”

Claire tore it open.

Pulled out a signed prenuptial agreement.

Held it directly in front of him.

Then looked toward the two hundred guests who had gone completely silent.

“Two hundred witnesses.”

Derek’s face went pale.

Claire raised the recorder.

“And your own voice.”

Patricia stopped smiling.

Derek whispered:

“Claire… what did you do?”

Claire looked at him.

“Nothing yet.”

Then she turned toward the ballroom exit.

That frightened Derek more than the recorder.

The ballroom humiliation was not even the first time Derek had used laughter to control a room.

At engagement parties, he told stories where Claire was always the punchline.

How she alphabetized spices.

How she once sent a twelve-line email about parking.

How she made financial models for vacations.

Guests laughed because Claire laughed too.

At first she genuinely did.

Then she noticed Derek never made himself the joke.

Humor always moved one direction.

When she mentioned it once, he said:

“You’re too sensitive when you’re the target.”

That sentence stayed.

The cake made the pattern physical.

The joke was not simply that Claire had frosting on her face.

The joke was that Derek could decide what happened to her body and expect her to perform amusement afterward.

That was why:

“Smile, Claire”

felt worse than the shove.

Because for the first time that day, Claire was not reacting to him.

She was executing a plan he did not understand.
