Chapter 6 - THE WEDDING PLANNER
The wedding planner, Elise Martin, noticed Patricia’s behavior before Claire did.
Patricia changed seating twice without approval.
Moved Claire’s mother farther from the head table.
Added a toast for Derek’s uncle.
Removed a short tribute Claire had planned for her late father.
Elise corrected the schedule.
Patricia said:
“Once she’s married, she’ll stop needing every little preference.”
Elise wrote it down.
Not because she expected litigation.
Because she documented client changes.
Then Derek instructed Elise:
“After the ceremony, route all financial vendor questions through me.”
Elise answered:
“Both clients signed the contract.”
Derek said:
“I’m the husband.”
Elise replied:
“And she is the bride who paid the deposit.”
Derek stared at her.
Later he complained to Claire:
“Your planner is combative.”
Claire asked Elise privately what happened.
Elise told her.
Then said:
“This may be none of my business, but every vendor working this event thinks your fiancé expects authority to change after the ceremony.”
Claire felt cold.
The cake stunt had also been discussed.
Not the face shove.
Derek asked the baker:
“Can the top tier handle a playful smash?”
The baker replied:
“Lightly, yes. Avoid forcing anyone into structural supports.”
Derek joked:
“She can take it.”
Elise documented that too.
Still not proof of future violence.
The cake baker also contacted Claire after the wedding.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“I should have stopped him.”
Claire frowned.
“How?”
“He asked whether the cake would hold if somebody pushed into it.”
Claire became still.
“What did you say?”
“I told him not to do that.”
The baker had even written:
Please do not force bride/groom faces into cake. Decorative supports present.
Derek answered with a laughing emoji.
Claire sent the exchange to Adrienne.
Again, not proof of financial coercion.
But it destroyed one part of Derek’s later story:
spontaneous joke.
He had considered the physical act beforehand.
That did not make the cake shove a major violent offense.
It made the humiliation intentional.
A pattern.
The wedding planner’s notes became useful in a way Claire never expected.
Elise had time-stamped vendor changes.
Derek requested:
exclusive control over bar extensions,
transportation release,
and final vendor gratuities after the ceremony.
Elise kept replying:
“Need Claire’s approval as co-client.”
Derek once wrote:
Once she’s legally Mrs. Morgan, I’ll approve.
Elise answered:
The contract does not change with marital status.
That email later became one of Adrienne’s favorite pieces of evidence.
Not because it proved abuse.
Because it showed Derek applying the same assumption across domains.
Marriage, in his mind, changed authority.
Vendors knew it did not.
