Chapter 9 - WHY CLAIRE STILL MARRIED HIM
People later asked:
“Why did you go through with the wedding?”
Claire hated the question.
There was no single answer.
Because two hundred guests had traveled.
Because her mother had spent months planning.
Because she loved Derek.
Because threats can sound smaller after sleep.
Because he apologized that morning.
Because he cried.
Because he said:
“I’m terrified of losing you.”
Because he promised the LLC was dead.
Because Claire wanted to believe the man she loved was still larger than the pattern she feared.
Also:
because Adrienne told her the prenup remained effective if she married.
That should not have mattered emotionally.
It did.
Claire felt protected enough to proceed.
Not safe.
Protected.
Different.
She made one decision before walking down the aisle.
The recorder would stay on during the reception.
Lena would hold:
the duplicate prenup,
the downloaded emails,
and Adrienne’s contact card.
Claire told herself:
I’m being cautious.
Hours later, frosting covered her face and Derek whispered:
“Good girl.”
Caution became evidence.
Derek also had evidence in his favor.
Messages from Claire showed affection after some of the earlier arguments.
She wrote:
Love you.
We’ll figure this out.
I’m excited to marry you.
His lawyer used them.
“If you believed he was coercive, why send these?”
Claire answered:
“Because I loved him.”
The lawyer pushed:
“You were not pretending?”
“No.”
That mattered too.
Abusive dynamics do not require every moment to be fear.
Claire and Derek had:
good dinners,
real intimacy,
shared friends,
trips,
private jokes,
career support.
The relationship was not false.
