Chapter 14 - CLAIRE STOPS NEEDING THE RECORDING

A year later, Claire listened to the recorder once.

Only once.

Derek:

Don’t embarrass me.

Then later:

Good girl.

She felt nothing dramatic.

No shaking.

Just sadness.

Adrienne asked:

“Why keep it?”

“Evidence.”

“The case is over.”

Claire looked at the small device.

True.

She had treated it like a shield.

Then a weapon.

Then proof she had not imagined the tone.

Now it was an object.

She archived the original file with her legal records.

Then threw the recorder away.

Lena said:

“Symbolic?”

Claire laughed.

“It stopped charging.”

Better.

Recovery did not need every object to become ceremony.

Patricia sent one apology letter.

Claire read it.

Did not respond.

May you like

Derek sent none.

That was almost easier.
