Chapter 14 - ROBERT CHANGES THE RULE
Robert met Ashley alone six months later.
She asked him for money.
$9,000.
“Just until bonuses.”
Robert almost wrote the check.
Habit.
Then stopped.
“What changes if I give you this?”
Ashley stared.
“You sound like Claire.”
“Answer.”
“I’ll catch up.”
“How?”
Silence.
Robert put the checkbook away.
Ashley cried.
“You’re choosing her over me.”
“No.”
“Then help me.”
“I am.”
“How is this helping?”
“Because I should have done this ten years ago.”
That was Robert’s accountability.
He had praised Daniel for rescuing Ashley because it relieved Robert of guilt about working through his children’s grief.
Daniel became substitute protector.
Ashley became permanent child.
Robert called that family closeness.
It had costs.
He helped Ashley find a financial counselor instead.
She hated him for two months.
Then sold the BMW.
Ashley’s first month without Daniel’s money was chaotic.
Late fees.
Embarrassing calls.
A cancelled weekend trip.
She sold two handbags.
Returned several unopened purchases.
None of it killed her.
That was the point.
She had spent years living as if financial discomfort were danger.
Once she survived discomfort, the mythology weakened.
She later told Robert:
“I thought saying no meant you didn’t love me.”
Robert answered:
“I helped teach you that.”
