Chapter 7 - ROBERT'S SILENCE
Robert’s statement to police became important.
He had seen the entire assault.
At first he minimized.
“Things got heated.”
The officer asked:
“Who kicked Claire?”
Robert looked down.
“Daniel.”
“Who else?”
“Ashley.”
“Did Claire hit anyone before that?”
“No.”
“Did she threaten anyone?”
“No.”
“Why did it start?”
Robert hesitated.
“The car.”
The officer waited.
Robert finally said:
“Ashley wanted Claire’s Lexus.”
Saying it aloud made the whole scene sound insane.
That was useful.
Family systems survive partly because no one states the rules in plain language.
Robert later told Claire:
“I told him to stop.”
Claire answered:
“You whispered.”
He flinched.
“You were right there.”
“I froze.”
“Yes.”
That was not the same as kicking her.
It was still something Robert had to live with.
Robert eventually apologized to Claire without asking for forgiveness.
“I should have stepped in.”
“Yes.”
“I was afraid Daniel would hit me.”
Claire looked at him.
That was new.
Robert continued:
“He hasn’t before. But I saw his face.”
Claire’s anger shifted.
Fear explained the freeze better than cowardice alone.
Still:
“You could have called 911.”
“I know.”
“You could have yelled louder.”
“I know.”
“You could have gotten between Ashley and me.”
Robert looked down.
“I know.”

No defense.
That made the apology heavier and cleaner.
