Chapter 5 - DANIEL'S RULE
Daniel grew up under one family rule:
Ashley needs protecting.
She was six years younger.
Their mother died when Ashley was eleven.
Robert worked long hours after the loss.
Daniel became:
driver,
homework helper,
protector,
substitute parent.
When Ashley cried, Daniel fixed.
When Ashley failed, Daniel explained.
When Ashley overspent in college, Daniel paid the card.
Robert praised him.
“You take care of your sister.”
Daniel built identity around that sentence.
Then married Claire.
Claire did not understand why every Ashley problem automatically became Daniel’s responsibility.
Daniel heard:
You don’t care about my sister.
Claire heard:
Your boundaries are less important than Ashley’s emergencies.
Both women started resenting each other.

Daniel kept mediating by giving Ashley what she wanted and asking Claire to tolerate it.
That strategy worked until the price became Claire’s property.
