Chapter 6 - THE MONEY
Claire first noticed a transfer marked:
MERCER FAMILY SUPPORT.
$8,500.
She asked Daniel.
“Ashley had tax trouble.”
“What kind?”
“Underpayment.”
“Does she have an accountant?”
“Yes.”
“Then why are we paying it?”
“She was short.”
Claire frowned.
“We have a postnup.”
Daniel said:
“This isn’t a business transaction. She’s family.”
Exactly the problem.
The next transfer:
$12,000.
Daniel said it was for Ashley’s medical deductible and rent.
Only part was.
The third:
$17,500.
Daniel did not mention it.
Claire found it while reconciling the joint account.
She asked:
“What was this?”
Daniel said:
“Business.”
“What business?”
“My business.”
Claire requested documentation.
He became angry.
“You audit everything.”
“I’m asking about seventeen thousand dollars.”
“Same thing.”
It was not.
The transfer had gone directly to Ashley.
