Claire filed for divorce.
Ethan asked once whether there was any possibility of reconciliation.
“No.”
Not:
maybe after therapy.
Not:
prove yourself.
No.
He accepted it badly at first.
Then eventually properly.
Their financial settlement took months.
House value divided according to law and agreement.
Retirement assets reviewed.
Claire kept her separate investment accounts.
Ethan kept his.
No secret fortune.
No revenge impoverishment.
Then came Bennett shares.
Claire’s 2% remained hers.
Ethan’s 8% remained subject to the marital-property analysis applicable to portions acquired during marriage.
Lawyers handled it.
The protective consent role did not automatically belong to Claire forever.
It belonged to the trust structure.
Then Ethan said during mediation:
“You’ll keep controlling the company after we divorce.”
Claire answered:
“Only while the agreement says I should.”
That frightened him because it was true.
She did not need marriage to have authority.
He had spent years assuming every part of her position came through him.
Then Daniel explained the trust committee could replace Claire eventually if governance conditions changed.
Claire was fine with that.
Power was not identity.
She did not want to spend her life approving Bennett debt.
