Chapter 8 - THE HOUSE

Ethan’s line echoed:

This house—this life—mine.

Legally, the house was marital property.

Purchased after marriage.

Both names on title.

Down payment came mostly from Ethan’s compensation and a smaller contribution from Claire’s pre-marital savings.

No secret ownership reversal.

Claire did not announce:

Actually, I own everything.

She did not need to.

Then during divorce proceedings, Ethan asked to remain in the house temporarily.

Claire refused to return there while the criminal no-contact order was active.

The court established temporary possession based on safety and practical factors.

Claire stayed elsewhere first.

Later, Ethan moved to a corporate apartment at his own expense, and Claire returned to the house.

Not because she “won” it finally.

Temporary arrangement.

Division would come later.

The first night back, Claire stood in the living room.

Same sofa.

Same rug.

The baseball rack was empty.

Police had taken the bat as evidence.

Claire’s arm still hurt.

She considered moving.

Then decided:

not yet.

Ethan’s violence did not automatically get ownership of the room.

She called a contractor the next morning.

Removed the sports rack.

Not because bats were evil.

Because she hated looking at it.

Then she replaced it with a bookshelf.

No symbolism announced.

She needed storage.

That was how ordinary recovery sometimes looked.
