Chapter 13 - RICHARD'S CONFESSION

Richard asked Claire to dinner.
Public restaurant.
No family house.
He had something to admit.
Years earlier, when selecting the consent holder, Richard had considered a retired banker.
Then chose Claire partly because she was marrying Ethan.
Claire frowned.
“That sounds like the opposite of independence.”
“I thought you could challenge him without humiliating him.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
Richard continued:
“I thought love would make the governance softer.”
There.
A design flaw.
Claire said:
“You wanted me to protect the company and protect his ego.”
“Yes.”
“That’s impossible.”
“I know now.”
Then Richard admitted he had repeatedly encouraged Claire to “handle Ethan privately” when he became aggressive in meetings.
Never violent.
Sharp.
Dismissive.
Controlling.
Richard saw it.
He thought marriage gave Claire special access.
She could calm him.
Claire looked at him.
“You outsourced managing your son to his wife.”
Richard lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
That was his accountability.
Then he said:
“I’m proposing the trust appoint a professional independent consent committee after the current refinancing period.”
Claire felt relief.
Not insult.
“Good.”
Richard looked surprised.
“You’re not angry?”
“I never wanted a permanent veto over my ex-husband’s company.”

There it was again.
Power people assumed she craved was actually a duty she was eager to finish correctly.
