Chapter 14 - MICHAEL LEARNS THE WORD “SON”

Michael stopped introducing Ryan as:

“My son.”

For a while.

Not because he rejected him.

Because he was afraid the word had become ownership.

Ryan noticed.

“You don’t call me your son anymore.”

Michael froze.

They were driving home from therapy.

“I wasn’t sure you wanted me to.”

Ryan looked out the window.

“I don’t know.”

“Okay.”

Silence.

Then Ryan said:

“Nathan is my biological dad.”

“Yes.”

“You raised me.”

“Yes.”

“Vanessa is my mom.”

“Yes.”

“Emma is my sister?”

Michael smiled faintly.

“If she agrees.”

Ryan rolled his eyes.

“She’ll say no just to be annoying.”

“Probably.”

Then:

“What are you?”

Michael thought.

“Someone who loves you and plans to keep showing up.”

Ryan stared at him.

“That’s long.”

“Sorry.”

A week later Ryan introduced Michael to a soccer coach.

“This is Michael.”

Then:

“He’s basically my dad.”

Michael did not correct him.

He did not claim more.

The word returned when Ryan chose it.

Michael also visited Eric Cole, the man originally listed on Ryan’s birth certificate.

Eric had not seen Ryan in years.

He was surprised by the request.

Michael asked:

“Did you know?”

Eric looked tired.

“I knew Ryan probably wasn’t mine.”

“Why sign?”

“I was married to Vanessa when he was born.”

“And later?”

“We handled it in the divorce.”

“Did she tell you it was me?”

“Yes.”

“Did she ever mention Nathan?”

Eric hesitated.

“Once.”

Michael stared.

“When?”

“During a fight.”

“What did she say?”

“That none of us knew whose baby it was.”

Michael closed his eyes.

Another adult had carried a piece.

Not enough to solve the truth.

Enough to show uncertainty had never been as private as Margaret and Vanessa claimed.

Eric said:

“I figured you knew.”

Michael laughed bitterly.

Everybody figured somebody else knew.

May you like

That was how secrets survive crowded rooms.

That difference changed everything.
