Chapter 6 - THE ENVELOPE

Michael did not open the envelope in the banquet room.
Claire was right.
Too many children.
Too many guests.
Too much humiliation already.
He took Ryan into a private lounge with Claire.
Vanessa followed.
Margaret tried.
Michael pointed at her.
“No.”
She stopped.
That was new.
Inside the lounge, Michael sat.
Ryan stood by the wall.
Vanessa folded her arms.
Claire remained near the door.
Michael opened the report.
Read.
Then read again.
His face emptied.
“Excluded.”
No one answered.
He looked at Vanessa.
“What does excluded mean?”
She stared at him.
“You know what it means.”
His voice broke.
“Say it.”
Vanessa looked away.
“You’re not his biological father.”
Ryan made a small sound.
Michael immediately turned toward him.
“Ryan—”
The boy backed away.
“No.”
Michael stopped.
Good.
He did not touch him without permission.
Then he looked back at Vanessa.
“Who is?”
She did not answer.
Claire said:
“The report suggests a close Bennett paternal relative.”
Michael went still.
He had one brother.
“Nathan?”
Vanessa began crying.
That was enough.
Ryan looked from one adult to another.
“My dad is dead?”
Michael stared at him.
“I don’t know yet.”
Vanessa whispered:
“He was.”
Michael’s eyes snapped to her.
“You knew?”
“I suspected.”
“How strongly?”
Silence.
“How strongly, Vanessa?”
She covered her face.
“Strongly.”
Michael stood so quickly the chair fell backward.
“You let me raise him believing he was mine.”
Vanessa screamed:
“You wanted him!”
Ryan flinched.
Claire stepped between the adults and the boy.
“Stop talking like he’s a contract.”
Silence.
Ryan looked at Claire.
For the first time all day, his arrogance was gone.
He looked thirteen.
Just thirteen.
Ryan’s anger did not stay aimed at Michael.
He turned on Vanessa.
“You knew.”
Vanessa said:
“I wasn’t certain.”
“You were certain enough to tell me he was Dad.”
“I believed he could be.”
“That’s not the same.”
She cried.
“I was trying to give you stability.”
Ryan laughed.
“I had stability. I didn’t have truth.”
Then he asked:
“Did Nathan want me?”
Vanessa froze.
That was harder.
Nathan had wanted the idea of Ryan more consistently than the responsibilities around Ryan.
He bought a crib.
Missed a pediatric appointment.
Held Ryan tenderly.
Arrived drunk once.
Promised money he did not have.
Vanessa answered carefully.
“He cared.”
Ryan stared.
“That’s not what I asked.”
“No.”
Then:
“He was not ready to be your father.”
Ryan looked away.
The answer hurt because it did not offer a replacement hero.
Michael was not biological father.
May you like
Nathan was not a hidden perfect father.
Reality gave Ryan two imperfect men instead of one clean identity.
