Chapter 8 - THE SECOND TEST
Claire refused to let the family stop at suspicion.
Nathan was dead.
A relationship hint was not a final identity.
They needed evidence.
Nathan’s stored medical pathology samples from a surgery years earlier were no longer available for testing.
But his acknowledged daughter from a prior relationship existed.
Twenty-year-old Ava Bennett.
Michael had barely seen her since Nathan died because Ava was raised by her mother in Wisconsin.
Claire contacted Ava through counsel.
No pressure.
No secret sample.
Ava agreed to an accredited kinship test after speaking with an independent genetic counselor.
Why agree?
“Because if Ryan is my brother, I want to know.”
The lab compared:
Ryan,
Ava,
Michael,
and available grandparent reference data with consent.
The probability strongly supported Ryan and Ava sharing the same biological father.
Nathan.
Michael read the report alone first.
Then invited Ryan.
The boy sat on the opposite side of the table.
Michael said:
“The test says Nathan was your biological father.”
Ryan’s face twisted.
“So you’re not.”
“Not biologically.”
“Then what are you?”
Michael swallowed.
“That depends partly on what you want.”
Ryan looked angry.
“You lied too.”
“I didn’t know.”
“You believed them.”
“Yes.”
“You were stupid.”
Michael flinched.
Then nodded.
“Yes.”
Claire heard from the hallway.
Michael did not defend his pride.
That mattered.
Ryan asked:
“Do you still want me?”
Michael answered too quickly.
“Yes.”
Then corrected himself.
“I love you. But I also know you may need space from me.”
Ryan stared at him.
“You’re not going to make me call Nathan Dad, right?”
“No.”
“Or you?”
“No.”

The boy’s shoulders dropped slightly.
For the first time, fatherhood became something Michael stopped claiming and started offering.
