Chapter 7 - THE ORIGINAL PEN

Police found Claire’s original pen in Lorraine’s house.
Not hidden well.
Inside a desk drawer beneath checkbooks.
Device ID matched Claire’s receipt.
Lorraine said:
“Claire gave it to me.”
Claire laughed when told.
Then forensic extraction.
There was an audio file.
Crash-night.
Damaged? No.
Intact.
Claire almost cried with relief.
Harris listened.
Daniel:
“I drove. YOU take the blame.”
Claire:
“And if he dies?”
Daniel:
“Then YOU go down for it!”
Lorraine:
“Now sign.”
Clear.
Then more.
Claire:
“Why are you so scared?”
Daniel:
“Because Crane was supposed to keep his mouth shut.”
Lorraine:
“Daniel!”
Claire’s blood went cold.
Crane.
Not random.
Then Daniel:
“He threatened everything.”
Lorraine:
“Stop talking.”
The recording was devastating.
It also contained one line nobody expected.
Claire:
"Why did you take his phone?"
Daniel:
"Because he recorded me."
Lorraine:
"Shut up!"
Claire did not even remember asking.
She had been terrified and talking to keep Daniel talking.
Now that instinct handed police a new search target.
The roadside evidence inventory listed:
watch,
wallet,
one earbud,
keys.
No phone.
Daniel's later claim that he never touched Elliot's belongings weakened immediately.
Then Claire asked:
"Did he bring the phone home?"
Harris said:
"We're looking."
Lorraine's house became more important by the hour.
But Harris did not smile.
He asked:
“Mrs. Bennett, did you know who Crane was before tonight?”
“Only his name.”
“Did you know about the insurance investigation?”
“No.”
The audio supported that.
Then one thing troubled Harris.
There was a gap.
Three minutes missing between Daniel’s confession and Claire’s signature.
Not erased.
The pen had stopped recording.
Then resumed.
Claire remembered pressing once to start, once to stop.
No gap unexplained.
Fine.
Then the recording ended before Lorraine switched pens.
The swap remained separate evidence.
Lorraine’s fingerprints on Claire’s original pen.
Expected perhaps if she handled it.
Still.
Then Harris said:
“You were right.”
Claire looked at him.
About the recording.
Not everything.
May you like
Good distinction.
But the case was no longer hers to defend alone.
