Chapter 8 - THE MAN WHO WAS WAITING FOR DANIEL
Elliot Crane recovered enough to speak.
He said Daniel contacted him first.
Not Claire.
At 9:58 p.m., Elliot received a text from a prepaid number:
I HAVE THE BPS LEDGER. QUARRY TURNOUT. 10:40.
Elliot assumed it came from a whistleblower.
He went.
Daniel arrived in the SUV.
Elliot recognized him.
Argument.
Daniel demanded to know what Elliot had found.
Elliot refused.
Then said he was going to Northline’s fraud unit the next morning.
Daniel threatened:
“You’ll bury my mother too.”
Elliot replied:
“That depends on what she signed.”
Then Elliot walked away.
Daniel drove beside him.
Yelling through the window.
Elliot told him to leave.
Then he stepped away from the shoulder to avoid the SUV.
The car struck him.
Did Daniel mean to?
Elliot said:
“I think he was trying to scare me.”
Not kill.
Then after impact, Daniel got out.
Looked at him.
Elliot remembered saying:
“Call 911.”
Daniel took Elliot’s phone.
Then drove away.
That mattered.
Not only leaving.
Taking the phone.
Why?
Evidence.
Elliot had photographed invoice records.
The phone was missing from roadside evidence.
Where was it?
Lorraine’s house.
