Chapter 5 - HER MOTHER HAD HEARD MORE THAN SHE SAID
Chloe’s mother, Margaret, had lived in the house six months.
Everyone assumed she heard less because she moved slowly.
That was a mistake.
Two weeks before the kitchen attack, Margaret woke at 2 a.m. and heard Richard in the study.
He was on speakerphone.
A man said:
“If she won’t sign voluntarily, capacity may become the issue.”
Richard answered:
“She’s exhausted. Her mother’s health is destroying her.”
The man:
“Exhaustion is not incapacity.”
Richard:
“It can look like it.”
Margaret did not confront him.
She told Chloe the next morning.
That was when Chloe contacted Mara.
They began preserving everything.
Medical records showing Chloe’s full capacity.
Trust documents.
Home-security logs.
Richard’s messages.
They also created the emergency protocol.
Margaret cried when she explained this to police.
“I thought he was preparing to call her unstable.”
He was.
The insurance transfer packet contained a physician letter stating Chloe had shown “recent episodes of confusion and impaired judgment.”
