Chapter 5 - WENDY'S GUARANTEE

Wendy’s involvement made sense once Jessi learned one fact.

Two years earlier, when Romano Commercial Interiors expanded into a larger warehouse, Wendy had signed a limited personal guarantee.

Maximum exposure:

$250,000.

She did it proudly.

“My son built something real.”

At the time, Luca’s numbers supported the risk.

Now the company’s covenant breach made that guarantee feel different.

If the business failed badly enough, Wendy’s savings and part of the equity in her condo could be exposed up to the guaranteed amount, depending on enforcement and other collateral.

Luca told her:

“Jessi can fix this.”

That sentence became Wendy’s worldview.

Not:

Jessi can choose whether to help.

Jessi can fix this.

When Jessi said no, Wendy heard:

Jessi is choosing to endanger me.

Fear converted another person’s property into an obligation.

Wendy’s guarantee came from love and pride.

When Luca first asked, she read every page.

She was not tricked.

The exposure cap was clear.

She signed anyway.

Her condo was mostly paid off.

Her retirement savings were adequate.

She believed in her son.

Years later, when risk increased, she rewrote her own decision emotionally.

I helped him.

Therefore everyone else should too.

That is how voluntary sacrifice becomes contagious obligation.

Jessi could respect Wendy’s risk without matching it.
