Chapter 7 - JESSI PREPARES
Jessi hired an attorney named Rachel Kim.
Rachel’s advice was unexciting.
Do not sign anything you do not understand.
Communicate refusal in writing.
Tell the lender directly.
Preserve messages.
Do not meet alone if you believe Luca may become coercive.
Jessi felt embarrassed.
“He’s my husband.”
Rachel answered:
“That changes the relationship. Not the need for consent.”
Jessi sent the bank:
I have not agreed to pledge, transfer, mortgage, or otherwise encumber Harper Storage. Please communicate with me directly regarding any proposed transaction involving the property.
The lender acknowledged.
Luca found out the next day.
He accused Jessi of humiliating him with his bank.
She said:
“I corrected the record.”
He shouted:
“You made me look like a liar.”
Jessi answered:
“I told the truth.”
That distinction broke something in him.
Jessi’s written refusal was only four sentences.
No accusation.
No threat.
No mention of divorce.
Rachel deliberately kept it narrow.
I have not agreed.
Do not rely on representations to the contrary.

Luca called it humiliating because it exposed a private disagreement to professionals.
Jessi called it necessary because he had already exposed the disagreement by speaking for her.
Privacy had stopped being neutral once his version entered the transaction.
Rachel also warned Jessi about one uncomfortable point.
“If you stay in the house, keep your own safety in mind.”
“I don’t want Emma uprooted.”
“I understand.”
“I don’t want to make this bigger.”
Rachel paused.
“It is already as big as Luca makes it.”
Jessi hated that answer.
She wanted preparation to guarantee nothing worse would happen.
It could not.
